1 John 2 — clausal layoutΙΩΑΝΝΟΥ Α′ Β′

Each line is one clause or discrete phrase of the standard critical text, colored by syntactic type; indentation marks levels of subordination. The verse numbers sit in the left gutter; the small tag on each line names the clause type and its function.

independentparticipialrelativepurposecausecomparativecontentconditionalphrase modifierdashed = verbless / suspended

Flush-left = a main (independent) clause. Each dependent line begins directly beneath the word it attaches to in the line above — the anchor word is dotted-underlined, and lights up when you hover its dependent clause; each tag also names the attachment. A dashed border marks verbless, elliptical, or suspended lines. Where a long sentence's staircase runs wider than the page, the diagram scrolls sideways. (In print, or without JavaScript, lines fall back to stepped indent columns.)

Analysis. 1 John 2 moves in short, flush-left pulses — almost everything sits at depth 0 or 1, and the chapter's argument is carried not by chaining (nothing here runs past depth 2) but by repetition: the participial figures ὁ λέγων / ὁ ἀγαπῶν / ὁ μισῶν stand one purple line each with their verdicts (vv. 4–11), the olive protases lean forward on their apodoses (vv. 1, 15, 19, 24, 28–29), and the showpiece is the double triad of vv. 12–14 — six identical purple address-lines (τεκνία, πατέρες, νεανίσκοι; then παιδία, πατέρες, νεανίσκοι), each dangling its red ὅτι line, two three-rung columns with the verb shifting from γράφω to the epistolary aorist ἔγραψα. Dashed borders mark the chapter's suspensions: the ὁ λέγων subject of v. 4 held before its ψεύστης verdict, the ellipsis of v. 19 (ἀλλ' ἵνα φανερωθῶσιν — supply 'they went out'), and the two casus-pendens openings ὑμεῖς ὃ ἠκούσατε (v. 24) and καὶ ὑμεῖς τὸ χρῖσμα (v. 27), each resumed by its verb a line later. Interpretive choices the layout takes a side on: the six ὅτι clauses of vv. 12–14 are read as causal ('because your sins are forgiven'), not content; ἡ ἀγάπη τοῦ πατρός (v. 15) as love FOR the Father (objective genitive); πάντες at v. 20 as nominative ('you all know,' the critical text); μένετε at v. 27 as imperative, matching v. 28; and at v. 28 ἐάν φανερωθῇ is read (over ὅταν) with Christ as subject — the protasis drawn up inside the ἵνα as a nested olive line.
