1 Thessalonians 2 — clausal layoutΠΡΟΣ ΘΕΣΣΑΛΟΝΙΚΕΙΣ Α′ Β′

Each line is one clause or discrete phrase of the standard critical text, colored by syntactic type; indentation marks levels of subordination. The verse numbers sit in the left gutter; the small tag on each line names the clause type and its function.

independentparticipialrelativepurposecausecomparativecontentphrase modifierdashed = verbless / suspended

Flush-left = a main (independent) clause. Each dependent line begins directly beneath the word it attaches to in the line above — the anchor word is dotted-underlined, and lights up when you hover its dependent clause; each tag also names the attachment. A dashed border marks verbless, elliptical, or suspended lines. Where a long sentence's staircase runs wider than the page, the diagram scrolls sideways. (In print, or without JavaScript, lines fall back to stepped indent columns.)

Analysis. The chapter's signature shape is the fronted participle: again and again a teal line leans forward on the purple main verb beneath it — προπαθόντες καὶ ὑβρισθέντες before ἐπαρρησιασάμεθα (v. 2), ὁμειρόμενοι before εὐδοκοῦμεν (v. 8), ἐργαζόμενοι before ἐκηρύξαμεν (v. 9), παραλαβόντες before ἐδέξασθε (v. 13), ἀπορφανισθέντες before ἐσπουδάσαμεν (v. 17) — so the defense proceeds as remembered narrative: what happened first, then what we did. Verses 3–6 are the purgation, a flush-left run of negations (the verbless v. 3, the οὔτε series of vv. 5–6) with the two witness-appeals — καθὼς οἴδατε and the verbless θεὸς μάρτυς — hanging beside them: you can verify the outward conduct, God the hidden motive. Verses 10–12 slide into anacoluthon: after καθάπερ οἴδατε the expected finite verb never comes, and the layout lets the triple participle παρακαλοῦντες/παραμυθούμενοι/μαρτυρόμενοι supply it, descending to the chapter's deepest line, τοῦ καλοῦντος. Verses 14–16 hang a five-line indictment from the single word Ἰουδαίων — two aorist crimes, then present-tense participles, climaxing in κωλυόντων with its blocked ἵνα σωθῶσιν — before the flush-left aorist verdict ἔφθασεν. Cruxes the layout takes a side on: v. 7 reads ἤπιοι 'gentle' with the printed text (SBLGNT; NA28/THGNT print νήπιοι 'infants' — one letter after ἐγενήθημεν's final -ν); ἐν βάρει (v. 6) is taken as weight/importance rather than only financial burden (though ἐπιβαρῆσαι in v. 9 keeps that overtone alive); ὡς in v. 10 is read as indirect exclamation ('how holily…'); and εἰς τὸ ἀναπληρῶσαι (v. 16) is read as result — the filling-up of sins as outcome, not the persecutors' aim.
