2 Thessalonians 2 — clausal layoutΠΡΟΣ ΘΕΣΣΑΛΟΝΙΚΕΙΣ Β′ Β′

Each line is one clause or discrete phrase of the standard critical text, colored by syntactic type; indentation marks levels of subordination. The verse numbers sit in the left gutter; the small tag on each line names the clause type and its function.

independentparticipialrelativepurposecausecomparativecontentconditionalphrase modifierdashed = verbless / suspended

Flush-left = a main (independent) clause. Each dependent line begins directly beneath the word it attaches to in the line above — the anchor word is dotted-underlined, and lights up when you hover its dependent clause; each tag also names the attachment. A dashed border marks verbless, elliptical, or suspended lines. Where a long sentence's staircase runs wider than the page, the diagram scrolls sideways. (In print, or without JavaScript, lines fall back to stepped indent columns.)

Analysis. The chapter's shape is a broken sentence flanked by two whole ones. The appeal (vv. 1–2) hangs everything from one Ἐρωτῶμεν: the topic pair (the parousia and our gathering), the εἰς τό purpose of unshaken minds, and beneath the alarm the three false channels — spirit, word, letter 'as if from us' — with the forged claim itself at the bottom: the Day has arrived. Then the famous aposiopesis (v. 3): the ὅτι opens onto an ἐὰν μή double protasis — unless the apostasy comes first, unless the man of lawlessness is unveiled — and the apodosis NEVER COMES. The layout renders both limbs dashed and forward-leaning over the ellipsis every reader must supply, '[that day will not come],' while the rebel's portrait descends beneath his own name: son of destruction, self-exalting over every so-called god, enthroned in God's temple, proclaiming himself God. The restrainer paragraph keeps the riddle the text keeps: τὸ κατέχον neuter in v. 6, ὁ κατέχων masculine in v. 7 — a power that is also a person; the classic identifications (the Roman order and the emperor, the gospel mission and its preacher, God's own restraining hand) are named in the tags without being decided, and v. 7's clipped μόνον ὁ κατέχων ἄρτι is dashed, its verb ('will restrain') supplied from the participle itself. The counterfeit parousia of vv. 9–10 mirrors the true one — power, signs, wonders, all genitive-tainted by ψεύδους — and the judicial sending of v. 11 answers the refusal of v. 10: because they did not welcome the love of the truth, God himself sends the ἐνέργεια of delusion, that the lie be believed and the judgment fall. The final panel is the counterweight: Ἡμεῖς δέ at the margin, thanksgiving for election — printing ἀπαρχήν, 'firstfruits,' as the harder reading against the well-attested ἀπ' ἀρχῆς 'from the beginning' — through Spirit-sanctification and truth-belief, called through 'our gospel' to the obtaining of glory; then the twin imperatives (stand firm, hold the traditions) and the wish-prayer whose double subject — the Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father — governs singular optatives (παρακαλέσαι, στηρίξαι), the grammar quietly confessing the unity of the Son and the Father in the one work of comfort.
