2 Timothy 2 — clausal layoutΠΡΟΣ ΤΙΜΟΘΕΟΝ Β′ Β′

The same clause-by-clause layout, line-aligned with the Greek edition: each line renders one clause or discrete phrase, colored by the Greek clause's syntactic type, with indentation marking levels of subordination.

independentparticipialrelativepurposecausecomparativecontentconditionalphrase modifierdashed = verbless / suspended

Flush-left = a main (independent) clause. Each dependent line begins directly beneath the word it attaches to in the line above — the anchor word is dotted-underlined, and lights up when you hover its dependent clause; each tag also names the attachment. A dashed border marks verbless, elliptical, or suspended lines. Where a long sentence's staircase runs wider than the page, the diagram scrolls sideways. (In print, or without JavaScript, lines fall back to stepped indent columns.)

Analysis. The chapter reads as a single column of second-person imperatives at the left margin — ἐνδυναμοῦ, παράθου, συγκακοπάθησον, νόει, μνημόνευε, ὑπομίμνῃσκε, σπούδασον, περιΐστασο, φεῦγε/δίωκε, παραιτοῦ — with the argument hanging beneath them. Three gnomic pictures follow the soldier-command (vv. 4–6): the campaigner with his purpose clause, the athlete whose ἐὰν-protasis leans forward on οὐ στεφανοῦται while the ἐὰν μή 'unless' hangs backward on it, the toiling farmer in a single δεῖ line — left unexplained, because v. 7 makes the reticence a method: ponder, and the Lord gives the σύνεσις. Remember-Jesus (v. 8) carries the two-member creed under Χριστόν (raised, of David's seed) and the norm κατὰ τὸ εὐαγγέλιόν μου, from which the relative drops to Paul's chains before the flush-left ἀλλά answers: the word of God is not bound (δέδεται answering δεσμῶν). The hymn (vv. 11–13) is laid out like 1 Tim 3:1: πιστὸς ὁ λόγος points forward — the γάρ is taken as quoted with the saying, the trace of its original mooring — and four εἰ-protases lean forward at one depth on four apodoses hanging as quoted content under λόγος; the fourth line breaks the symmetry (faithlessness is not answered in kind), and the layout gives the reason its own line: ἀρνήσασθαι γὰρ ἑαυτὸν οὐ δύναται. In vv. 14–19 the two presentations face each other — the congregation reminded, Timothy presenting himself δόκιμον with the road-cutter's participle ὀρθοτομοῦντα — and the gangrene sentence chains down through ὧν to Hymenaeus and Philetus and their fatal ἤδη (the resurrection already past), before the μέντοι counter-turn sets the foundation flush left with its two inscriptions as quoted lines under σφραγῖδα, Num 16:5 and Num 16:26 (with Isa 52:11 coloring): election and obligation, the seal's two faces. The great house (vv. 20–22) hangs the μέν/δέ vessel-pair as dashed fragments under σκεύη; ἀπὸ τούτων in v. 21 is read as 'from these vessels of dishonor' — the false teachers and their talk — so that the parable's point is the startling one that a vessel may change shelves. The closing profile (vv. 23–26) hangs entirely on οὐ δεῖ μάχεσθαι and its ἀλλὰ … εἶναι: the servant's qualities, the correcting participle, and under it the μήποτε clause, read not as fear but as tentative purpose — 'if perhaps God may grant them repentance' — with ἀνανήψωσιν coordinated under the same hope. The last line takes the disputed side: ἐζωγρημένοι ὑπ’ αὐτοῦ εἰς τὸ ἐκείνου θέλημα is read with both pronouns of the devil — taken alive by him, held for that one's will — the shift from αὐτοῦ to ἐκείνου marking rhetorical distance, not a new referent; the readings that split the pronouns (captured by the Lord's servant, or unto God's will) are flagged on the line as possible but strained.
