Hebrews 11 — clausal layoutΠΡΟΣ ΕΒΡΑΙΟΥΣ ΙΑ′

Each line is one clause or discrete phrase of the standard critical text, colored by syntactic type; indentation marks levels of subordination. The verse numbers sit in the left gutter; the small tag on each line names the clause type and its function.

independentparticipialrelativepurposecausecomparativecontentconditionalphrase modifierdashed = verbless / suspended

Flush-left = a main (independent) clause. Each dependent line begins directly beneath the word it attaches to in the line above — the anchor word is dotted-underlined, and lights up when you hover its dependent clause; each tag also names the attachment. A dashed border marks verbless, elliptical, or suspended lines. Where a long sentence's staircase runs wider than the page, the diagram scrolls sideways. (In print, or without JavaScript, lines fall back to stepped indent columns.)

Analysis. Hebrews 11 shows its argument in its left margin: a drumbeat of flush-left Πίστει heads — sixteen of them from v. 3 to v. 31, with the summarizing variations Κατὰ πίστιν (v. 13) and διὰ πίστεως (v. 33) — one instrumental dative hammered down the whole of sacred history, from creation to the Maccabean martyrs. Under each head the chaining stays deliberately shallow: a participle, a γάρ-line, a purpose clause, then the next hero flush left again — faith is many discrete acts, not one long sentence. The exceptions are structural: the pilgrim interlude of vv. 13–16, where a participle train (not receiving, seeing, greeting, confessing) hangs from ἀπέθανον and the chapter's one forward-leaning olive protasis (εἰ μὲν ἐκείνης ἐμνημόνευον) leans on its counterfactual apodosis until νῦν δέ resolves it; the Akedah (vv. 17–19), where the Gen 21:12 promise hangs as a blue content line under ἐλαλήθη, framed by the dramatic perfect προσενήνοχεν and the conative imperfect προσέφερεν; and the peroration (vv. 32–38), where one γάρ-line carrying seven names supports a catena of exploits all anchored to Γεδεών, until the pivot ἄλλοι δέ turns triumph into torture. The layout takes sides where it must, and says so: in v. 11 αὐτὴ Σάρρα is kept as the subject of ἔλαβεν — she 'received power for the founding of a seed' — though καταβολὴ σπέρματος is normally the begetter's act and many interpreters make Abraham the subject (the tag flags the crux); v. 26's ὀνειδισμὸς τοῦ Χριστοῦ is read as the Messiah's own reproach shared proleptically by Moses, not merely 'Christ-like' reproach; v. 27's κατέλιπεν Αἴγυπτον is left open between the flight to Midian and the exodus, each reading having a difficulty the tag names; and v. 35's two resurrections are distinguished — women received their dead back to mortal life, while the tortured refused release to obtain the κρείττων ἀνάστασις that never dies. Verses 39–40 close the chapter under a single head: all attested, none yet perfected — and the final ἵνα makes their perfection wait, deliberately, for ours.
