John 1 — clausal layoutΚΑΤΑ ΙΩΑΝΝΗΝ Α′

Each line is one clause or discrete phrase of the standard critical text, colored by syntactic type; indentation marks levels of subordination. The verse numbers sit in the left gutter; the small tag on each line names the clause type and its function.

independentparticipialrelativepurposecausecomparativecontentconditionalphrase modifierdashed = verbless / suspended

Flush-left = a main (independent) clause. Each dependent line begins directly beneath the word it attaches to in the line above — the anchor word is dotted-underlined, and lights up when you hover its dependent clause; each tag also names the attachment. A dashed border marks verbless, elliptical, or suspended lines. Where a long sentence's staircase runs wider than the page, the diagram scrolls sideways. (In print, or without JavaScript, lines fall back to stepped indent columns.)

Analysis. John 1 is two kinds of Greek on one page, and the layout shows the seam. The Prologue (vv. 1–18) is elevated, hymnic prose: its cola sit coordinate and flush-left, purple under purple, because the staircase parallelism — the last word of one colon becoming the subject of the next (ὁ λόγος … ὁ λόγος … ὁ λόγος; ζωή … ἡ ζωή; τὸ φῶς … τὸ φῶς) — is real coordination, never falsely nested. Against that column the two John-the-Baptist parentheses (vv. 6–8, 15) stand as their own movements, and the few indents are load-bearing: the chained purposes of v. 7, the ὅσοι casus pendens of v. 12 leaning forward like a protasis on ἔδωκεν, the double verbless apposition of v. 14 hanging beneath the beheld δόξα. From v. 19 the narrative proper begins and the page turns Markan in shape but Johannine in tempo: the historic presents land thick (λέγει again and again, βλέπει, εὑρίσκει) and are flagged as they come; speech always hangs blue (cnt) beneath its verb of saying, so the interrogation of vv. 19–27 reads as stacked one-line questions and terse denials (Οὐκ εἰμί. Οὔ.), with the Isa 40:3 citation under ἔφη; and the translation glosses Ῥαββί, Μεσσίας, Κηφᾶς each hang as a mod-line beneath the word they translate. Cruxes the layout takes a side on or inherits: θεὸς ἦν ὁ λόγος (v. 1c) is read qualitatively — the anarthrous predicate asserts what the Word was, not identity with the Father nor 'a god'; ὃ γέγονεν is kept with v. 3 as the text prints it, the patristic alternative ('what has come to be in him was life') named in the tag; ἐρχόμενον (v. 9) is read with τὸ φῶς (periphrastic 'was coming'), not with 'every man'; the plural ἐγεννήθησαν (v. 13) is printed against the Old Latin singular that makes v. 13 a virgin-birth statement; μονογενὴς θεός (v. 18) is printed with P66 P75 ℵ B against the Byzantine ὁ μονογενὴς υἱός — one of the most significant variants in the NT, flagged where it falls; and the closing double-amen saying (v. 51) is laid out so that Gen 28:12 is audible — the angels ascending and descending no longer on Jacob's ladder but on the Son of Man.
