Romans 16 — clausal layoutΠΡΟΣ ΡΩΜΑΙΟΥΣ ΙϚ′

Each line is one clause or discrete phrase of the standard critical text, colored by syntactic type; indentation marks levels of subordination. The verse numbers sit in the left gutter; the small tag on each line names the clause type and its function.

independentparticipialrelativepurposecausecontentphrase modifierdashed = verbless / suspended

Flush-left = a main (independent) clause. Each dependent line begins directly beneath the word it attaches to in the line above — the anchor word is dotted-underlined, and lights up when you hover its dependent clause; each tag also names the attachment. A dashed border marks verbless, elliptical, or suspended lines. Where a long sentence's staircase runs wider than the page, the diagram scrolls sideways. (In print, or without JavaScript, lines fall back to stepped indent columns.)

Analysis. Romans 16 is a page of flush-left purple: some fifteen greeting-verbs — thirteen Ἀσπάσασθε commands, then ἀσπάζεται/ἀσπάζομαι from the senders' side — stand in a column, and the chapter's texture is the roll-call. The layout's rule for the list is fixed and kept throughout: bare honorific epithets (τὸν ἀγαπητόν μου, τὸν δόκιμον ἐν Χριστῷ, τοὺς συνεργούς μου, even the attributive participles τὰς κοπιώσας and τοὺς ὄντας ἐν κυρίῳ) stay inline with their greeting, while every finite relative expansion (οἵτινες … ὑπέθηκαν, οἷς … εὐχαριστῶ, ὅς ἐστιν ἀπαρχή, ἥτις … ἐκοπίασεν twice, οἵτινές εἰσιν ἐπίσημοι, οἳ … γέγοναν) drops to its own blue line under the name it honors. Only two shapes break the column. The Phoebe commendation (vv. 1–2): one Συνίστημι carrying the double ἵνα-request (receive her, stand by her) with its καὶ γάρ ground beneath — she was προστάτις first. And the closing doxology (vv. 25–27), the chapter's one deep sentence: the dative frame Τῷ δὲ δυναμένῳ suspended (dashed) over its two κατά-measures, the μυστήριον carrying a three-participle column — σεσιγημένου, φανερωθέντος, γνωρισθέντος — and the frame resumed at μόνῳ σοφῷ θεῷ only to be carried off by ᾧ: the sentence never finds a main verb, and the doxology rides out on the relative. Choices taken: Ἰουνίαν (v. 7) is read as the woman Junia, and ἐπίσημοι ἐν τοῖς ἀποστόλοις as 'outstanding among the apostles' (the rival 'well known to the apostles' is noted); Phoebe's διάκονον is a recognized ministry of the Cenchreae church and προστάτις a patron-benefactor, not a mere 'helper'; ἐν κυρίῳ in v. 22 is read with ἀσπάζομαι (Tertius greets in the Lord) rather than with ὁ γράψας; εἰς ὑπακοὴν πίστεως (v. 26) is kept inside the γνωρισθέντος line as the disclosure's aim (cf. 1:5); and the critical text is followed in omitting v. 24, so the numbering runs 1–23, 25–27.
