Titus 1 — clausal layoutΠΡΟΣ ΤΙΤΟΝ Α′

Each line is one clause or discrete phrase of the standard critical text, colored by syntactic type; indentation marks levels of subordination. The verse numbers sit in the left gutter; the small tag on each line names the clause type and its function.

independentparticipialrelativepurposecomparativecontentconditionalphrase modifierdashed = verbless / suspended

Flush-left = a main (independent) clause. Each dependent line begins directly beneath the word it attaches to in the line above — the anchor word is dotted-underlined, and lights up when you hover its dependent clause; each tag also names the attachment. A dashed border marks verbless, elliptical, or suspended lines. Where a long sentence's staircase runs wider than the page, the diagram scrolls sideways. (In print, or without JavaScript, lines fall back to stepped indent columns.)

Analysis. The chapter is a suspended salutation, an office-column, and an indictment. Verses 1–4 are one sentence: Παῦλος stands flush left and everything else hangs — the apostleship's aim (κατὰ πίστιν … καὶ ἐπίγνωσιν, the κατά taken as purpose rather than norm), the ground beneath it (ἐπ' ἐλπίδι ζωῆς αἰωνίου, read with faith-and-knowledge together rather than with ἀπόστολος alone), and then the chain the hope drags behind it: ἣν ἐπηγγείλατο with ἐφανέρωσεν δέ set beside it as the coordinate second verb of the relative — promised πρὸ χρόνων αἰωνίων, manifested καιροῖς ἰδίοις — then ὃ ἐπιστεύθην ἐγώ hanging on κηρύγματι by retained accusative and κατ' ἐπιταγήν beneath that, five deep before the dative Τίτῳ swings back up to hang directly on Παῦλος and the verbless greeting closes flush left. In vv. 5–9 the commission stands at zero (ἀπέλιπόν σε ἐν Κρήτῃ) with its two ἵνα-purposes beneath it; the layout reads εἴ τίς ἐστιν ἀνέγκλητος as a backward-leaning criterion clause anchored on καταστήσῃς — 'appoint … if anyone is blameless' — not a forward protasis, and hangs the home column from it (πιστά left open between 'believing' and 'trustworthy' on the line; μιᾶς γυναικὸς ἀνήρ read as marital fidelity). Verse 7's γάρ restates the criterion flush left as a δεῖ-head of exactly 1 Tim 3:2's shape — πρεσβύτερος becomes ἐπίσκοπος mid-argument, taken here as one office viewed by its function — with the dashed μή-column and ἀλλά-column under ἐπίσκοπον, and ἀντεχόμενον closing the profile, its ἵνα splitting into the two epexegetic infinitives, παρακαλεῖν to build and ἐλέγχειν to refute. Verses 10–14 give the reason: a relative cascade (οὓς δεῖ ἐπιστομίζειν → οἵτινες ὅλους οἴκους ἀνατρέπουσιν → διδάσκοντες → αἰσχροῦ κέρδους χάριν) falls from πολλοὶ ἀνυπότακτοι, and the Epimenides hexameter hangs as quoted content under εἶπέν — Κρῆτες ἀεὶ ψεῦσται against the ἀψευδὴς θεός of v. 2, the liar paradox noted but not pressed, since Paul's flush-left ἡ μαρτυρία αὕτη ἐστὶν ἀληθής endorses the proverb only as applied to the troublemakers — before ἔλεγχε αὐτοὺς ἀποτόμως carries the healing ἵνα, soundness defined by v. 14's participle as no longer heeding Jewish myths and human commands. Verses 15–16 close with twin verbless maxims at zero, the ἀλλά-correction relocating defilement from things to νοῦς and συνείδησις, and the profession/denial antithesis whose causal participle delivers the verdict: ἀδόκιμοι, failing the assay, πρὸς πᾶν ἔργον ἀγαθόν.
