1 Corinthians 12 — clausal layoutΠΡΟΣ ΚΟΡΙΝΘΙΟΥΣ Α′ ΙΒ′

Each line is one clause or discrete phrase of the standard critical text, colored by syntactic type; indentation marks levels of subordination. The verse numbers sit in the left gutter; the small tag on each line names the clause type and its function.

independentparticipialrelativepurposecausecomparativecontentconditionalphrase modifierdashed = verbless / suspended

Flush-left = a main (independent) clause. Each dependent line begins directly beneath the word it attaches to in the line above — the anchor word is dotted-underlined, and lights up when you hover its dependent clause; each tag also names the attachment. A dashed border marks verbless, elliptical, or suspended lines. Where a long sentence's staircase runs wider than the page, the diagram scrolls sideways. (In print, or without JavaScript, lines fall back to stepped indent columns.)

Analysis. 1 Corinthians 12 lays out in three moves what the colors make visible at a glance. The opening (vv. 1–3) hangs the chapter's test on two quoted acclamations: twin content clauses descend from γνωρίζω, and beneath the verbs of saying hang the impossible curse Ἀνάθεμα Ἰησοῦς and the Spirit-wrought confession Κύριος Ἰησοῦς — christology, not ecstasy, the criterion. Verses 4–11 read as columns: the triadic refrain (varieties — but the same Spirit, the same Lord, the same God) in balanced pairs at the margin, then the nine-gift catalogue as a flush-left column of elliptical independents, δίδοται stated once (v. 8) and understood eight times — the layout takes the ᾧ μὲν ... ἄλλῳ δέ series as coordinate main clauses (the γάρ grounding them on v. 7 noted in the tags) rather than as relatives chained under δίδοται — and the sovereign summary (v. 11) closes the column with the Spirit διαιροῦν καθὼς βούλεται. The long middle (vv. 12–26) is the body analogy: a triple fronted comparison (Καθάπερ γάρ ...) leaning on the shortest of apodoses, οὕτως καὶ ὁ Χριστός — the community named simply 'Christ' — grounded in the one-Spirit baptism with its εἴτε-pairs; then olive protases everywhere, as the discontented foot and ear speak in quoted complaints and the flush-left verdicts answer them (οὐ παρὰ τοῦτο οὐκ ἔστιν is taken as a rhetorical question — 'is it not still of the body?'), and the reductio questions stand verbless at the margin against the two νυνὶ/νῦν δέ resolutions: God placed the members as he willed; many members, one body. Verses 27–31 apply it: Ὑμεῖς δέ ἐστε σῶμα Χριστοῦ, the appointments of v. 28 hanging as a ranked column under ἔθετο (the οὓς μέν left without its answering δέ — anacoluthon as the list slides from persons to gifts), and the seven μή-questions in a flush-left volley, each expecting 'no.' Cruxes the layout takes a side on: τῶν πνευματικῶν (v. 1) is read as neuter, 'spiritual gifts'; v. 2 is allowed its anacoluthon (ὡς ἂν ἤγεσθε ἀπαγόμενοι) rather than smoothed; ἐν ἑνὶ πνεύματι (v. 13) is instrumental ('by one Spirit'); τὸ αὐτό (v. 25) is adverbial ('the same care'); and ζηλοῦτε (v. 31) is imperative, not indicative — the command that hands the chapter to the more excellent way.
