Hebrews 8 — clausal layoutΠΡΟΣ ΕΒΡΑΙΟΥΣ Η′

Each line is one clause or discrete phrase of the standard critical text, colored by syntactic type; indentation marks levels of subordination. The verse numbers sit in the left gutter; the small tag on each line names the clause type and its function.

independentparticipialrelativepurposecausecomparativecontentconditionalphrase modifierdashed = verbless / suspended

Flush-left = a main (independent) clause. Each dependent line begins directly beneath the word it attaches to in the line above — the anchor word is dotted-underlined, and lights up when you hover its dependent clause; each tag also names the attachment. A dashed border marks verbless, elliptical, or suspended lines. Where a long sentence's staircase runs wider than the page, the diagram scrolls sideways. (In print, or without JavaScript, lines fall back to stepped indent columns.)

Analysis. Hebrews 8 pivots on two flush-left purple summits and one long blue column. The first summit is ἔχομεν (v. 1) under the verbless heading Κεφάλαιον — the argument's own capstone: we have such a high priest, and the chain beneath seats him at the right hand (Ps 110:1) and names him λειτουργός of the true tent the Lord, not man, pitched. Verses 3–5 argue him off the earthly stage: the olive protasis of v. 4 (εἰ μὲν οὖν) leans forward on its apodosis — were he on earth he would not even be a priest — and the genitive absolute beneath steps down through the Levites to their ὑποδείγματι καὶ σκιᾷ service and the Exod 25:40 command hanging as content under the one word φησιν. The second summit is νυνὶ δέ (v. 6), the δέ that v. 4's μέν awaited; its ὅσῳ line makes the covenant the measure of the ministry, and v. 7's protasis–apodosis pair shows the first covenant convicted by the mere search for a second. Then the shape opens into the longest OT quotation in the NT: nineteen lines of Jer 31:31–34 (LXX 38) hanging from the single λέγει of v. 8, with real internal architecture — the announcement (συντελέσω), the negative definition (οὐ κατὰ τὴν διαθήκην with its ὅτι ground: THEY did not remain, and I disregarded them), the positive definition (ὅτι αὕτη ἡ διαθήκη, with διδούς resumed by the finite ἐπιγράψω and the two-way covenant formula), the end of covenant pedagogy (οὐ μὴ διδάξωσιν), and at the layout's deepest point the double ὅτι of v. 12 — the whole oracle bottoms out on ἵλεως ἔσομαι, forgiveness as the floor beneath the knowing. Verse 13 closes back at depth 0: the author's verdict πεπαλαίωκεν and a verbless maxim about what is aging. Cruxes the layout takes a side on: αὐτούς is read and construed with μεμφόμενος (God finds fault with the people, not 'says to them'); πολίτην, not πλησίον, is read at v. 11; ὑπόδειγμα is taken as 'copy,' not 'example'; νυνί in v. 6 is logical, not temporal; the anarthrous διδούς is laid as a modal participle under διαθήσομαι whose syntax slides into the finite ἐπιγράψω (the LXX anacoluthon kept, not smoothed); and the ὅτι of v. 10 is taken as genuine ground ('for this is the covenant'), not a mere recitative marker.
