John 18 — clausal layoutΚΑΤΑ ΙΩΑΝΝΗΝ ΙΗ′

Each line is one clause or discrete phrase of the standard critical text, colored by syntactic type; indentation marks levels of subordination. The verse numbers sit in the left gutter; the small tag on each line names the clause type and its function.

independentparticipialrelativepurposecausecontentconditionaldashed = verbless / suspended

Flush-left = a main (independent) clause. Each dependent line begins directly beneath the word it attaches to in the line above — the anchor word is dotted-underlined, and lights up when you hover its dependent clause; each tag also names the attachment. A dashed border marks verbless, elliptical, or suspended lines. Where a long sentence's staircase runs wider than the page, the diagram scrolls sideways. (In print, or without JavaScript, lines fall back to stepped indent columns.)

Analysis. John's arrest-and-trial narrative reads differently from Mark 14–15 at a glance: the flush-left column is stitched not by καί but by οὖν — John's signature connective, over a dozen times here — with historic presents (ἔρχεται, λέγει, Ἄγουσιν, φησίν) quickening every hinge, and the speech hanging blue in short, hard exchanges. The layout takes sides on the chapter's cruxes. The bare Ἐγώ εἰμι of vv. 5–8 is tagged for its divine-name resonance (Exod 3:14 LXX) — only John has the whole cohort drawing back and falling at the word — and Peter's Οὐκ εἰμί at vv. 17 and 25 is set as its deliberate negative image. The narrator's fulfilment notes are drawn as purpose clauses hanging from the very narrative they interpret: v. 9 (the let-these-go word keeps 17:12 — Jesus' own saying treated as Scripture) and v. 32 (the Jews' lack of capital jurisdiction routes Jesus to the Roman cross, the lifted-up death of 3:14; 12:32–33). The uniquely Johannine architecture is marked in the movement labels: Jesus goes to Annas BEFORE Caiaphas (v. 13; v. 24's ἀπέστειλεν οὖν is read sequentially, not as the harmonizing pluperfect 'had sent'), and Peter's denials are INTERLEAVED around the hearing — first denial vv. 15–18, hearing vv. 19–24, second and third denials vv. 25–27 — so that Jesus' open confession under interrogation and Peter's collapse at the charcoal fire run simultaneously, John's version of Mark's cruel symmetry. The praetorium scene keeps the Johannine chronology (v. 28: they will not be defiled, that they may eat the Passover — Jesus will die as the lambs are killed), and the four Pilate exchanges nest under their verbs of saying: the kingship declaration ἡ βασιλεία ἡ ἐμὴ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου τούτου with its second-class conditional leaning forward above its ἄν-apodosis, the everyone-of-the-truth close, Pilate's unanswered τί ἐστιν ἀλήθεια, the first no-guilt verdict, and the Barabbas choice, shut with the narrator's driest sentence: ἦν δὲ ὁ Βαραββᾶς λῃστής. Temporal ὡς (v. 6) is typed cnd (no temporal key), forward-leaning above its apodosis like the true protases of vv. 8, 23, 30, 36.
