Beloved, although I was making every effort to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you appealing that you contend for the faith once for all delivered to the saints.

For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly ones, who pervert the grace of our God into licentiousness and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.

First example of judgmentδὲThe first of three judgment paradigms (vv.5–7). Second example of judgmentτεThe second paradigm: the fallen angels (commonly read with Gen 6:1–4 and 1 Enoch, the 'Watchers' who left heaven). The wordplay turns on τηρέω — the angels failed to 'keep' their domain, so God has 'kept' them in chains: those who keep not are kept for judgment, the obverse of the faithful 'kept' in v.1.

Doxology (part 1: the One praised)δὲThe closing doxology (vv.24–25), among the grandest in the NT, answers the whole letter: in a world of stumbling apostates, God 'is able to keep' (φυλάξαι — the divine 'keeping' that completes the τηρέω theme) the faithful from falling and to present them faultless and exultant before his glory.
