Mark 8 — clausal layoutΚΑΤΑ ΜΑΡΚΟΝ Η′

Each line is one clause or discrete phrase of the standard critical text, colored by syntactic type; indentation marks levels of subordination. The verse numbers sit in the left gutter; the small tag on each line names the clause type and its function.

independentparticipialpurposecausecontentconditionaldashed = verbless / suspended

Flush-left = a main (independent) clause. Each dependent line begins directly beneath the word it attaches to in the line above — the anchor word is dotted-underlined, and lights up when you hover its dependent clause; each tag also names the attachment. A dashed border marks verbless, elliptical, or suspended lines. Where a long sentence's staircase runs wider than the page, the diagram scrolls sideways. (In print, or without JavaScript, lines fall back to stepped indent columns.)

Analysis. Mark 8 is the hinge of the Gospel, and the layout shows a chapter made almost entirely of talk: the flush-left purple column still drums out Mark's paratactic καί-clauses — commanded, broke, kept giving, ate, were satisfied, embarked — with the preposed circumstantial participles and genitive absolutes of chapter 1 leaning forward, anchorless, on the verbs below them (πολλοῦ ὄχλου ὄντος, λαβὼν τοὺς ἑπτὰ ἄρτους, ἀναστενάξας τῷ πνεύματι, προσλαβόμενος ὁ Πέτρος); but from v. 11 on nearly every event is a question, and the blue cnt lines under the verbs of saying carry the real action. The second wilderness feeding (vv. 1–10) opens with the compassion-speech — two ὅτι-grounds and one forward-leaning ἐάν protasis of fainting on the way — answered by the disciples' πόθεν, as if 6:35–44 had never happened. The sign-demand (vv. 11–13) is refused under oath, and the tag names the crux: εἰ δοθήσεται is the Hebraic εἰ of denial, an oath-formula whose self-curse apodosis is suppressed — an emphatic 'no sign will ever be given.' The leaven dialogue (vv. 14–21) is a rebuke in questions — the hardened heart, the Jer 5:21/Ezek 12:2 eyes-and-ears indictment turned from Israel onto Jesus' own disciples, and the two feedings recalled as a catechism of numbers (πόσους κοφίνους; Δώδεκα. πόσων σπυρίδων; Ἑπτά.); the second exam-question resumes with no fresh speech-frame and so stands flush-left, an asyndeton the tag flags. Its unanswered close (Οὔπω συνίετε;) is answered in acted form by the chapter's central crux: the two-stage healing at Bethsaida (vv. 22–26), the only cure in the Gospels that works by installments — first men 'like trees, walking,' then everything τηλαυγῶς — read here, with most interpreters, as Mark's parable of the disciples' half-sight, for Peter in the very next scene sees truly (Σὺ εἶ ὁ Χριστός) and yet blurrily, rebuking the cross out of his own confession. The layout tracks ἐπιτιμᾶν through three uses in four verses — Jesus sternly charging silence (v. 30), Peter daring to rebuke Jesus (v. 32), Jesus rebuking Peter back with the disciples in view (v. 33) — the exorcist's verb passed around the circle until Ὕπαγε ὀπίσω μου, Σατανᾶ lands with its ὅτι-ground hanging beneath it. The discipleship coda (vv. 34–38) is conditional architecture inside quoted speech: the εἴ-τις protasis and the ὃς-ἐάν indefinite relatives lean forward, one deeper than their apodoses, over the deny-take-follow imperatives, the save-lose paradox pair, the two γάρ-questions of the world and the soul, and the shame-saying whose ὅταν clause opens, for the first time in Mark, onto the Son of Man coming in his Father's glory. Minor cruxes inherited, not resolved: Δαλμανουθά (v. 10) is otherwise unknown (Magadan/Magdala in other witnesses); the leaven 'of Herod' (v. 15) is 'of the Herodians' in some manuscripts; the ὅτι of v. 24 is taken as causal-explanatory ('for I see them like trees'); and the one loaf in the boat (v. 14) is glossed, with the commentators, as more than an inventory note.
