Then there come to Jesus from Jerusalem Pharisees and scribes, saying,
Why do your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.
Ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Διὰ τί καὶ ὑμεῖς παραβαίνετε τὴν ἐντολὴν τοῦ θεοῦ διὰ τὴν παράδοσιν ὑμῶν;
But he answered and said to them, 'Why do you also transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?'
For God said, 'Honor your father and mother,' and, 'The one who speaks evil of father or mother must surely die.'
But you say, 'Whoever says to his father or mother, “Whatever help you might have had from me is a gift to God” —
he need not honor his father.' And so you have nullified the word of God for the sake of your tradition.
Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying:
'This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me;
and in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.'
And he called the crowd to himself and said to them, 'Hear and understand:
It is not what enters the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth — this defiles a person.'
Τότε προσελθόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ· Οἶδας ὅτι οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ἀκούσαντες τὸν λόγον ἐσκανδαλίσθησαν;
Then the disciples came and said to him, 'Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?'
But he answered, 'Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be rooted up.
Leave them alone; they are blind guides of the blind. And if a blind man guides a blind man, both will fall into a pit.'
Then Peter said to him, 'Explain this parable to us.'
ὁ δὲ εἶπεν· Ἀκμὴν καὶ ὑμεῖς ἀσύνετοί ἐστε;
And he said, 'Are you also still without understanding?
οὐ νοεῖτε ὅτι πᾶν τὸ εἰσπορευόμενον εἰς τὸ στόμα εἰς τὴν κοιλίαν χωρεῖ καὶ εἰς ἀφεδρῶνα ἐκβάλλεται;
Do you not perceive that whatever enters the mouth passes into the stomach and is expelled into the latrine?
But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and these things defile a person.
For out of the heart come evil thoughts — murders, adulteries, sexual immoralities, thefts, false witnessings, slanders.
These are the things that defile a person; but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a person.'
And going out from there, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon.
And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and cried, saying, 'Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed.'
But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and asked him, saying, 'Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.'
But he answered, 'I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.'
But she came and knelt before him, saying, 'Lord, help me!'
But he answered, 'It is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs.'
But she said, 'Yes, Lord; yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table.'
Then Jesus answered her, 'O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.' And her daughter was healed from that hour.
And going on from there, Jesus came alongside the Sea of Galilee, and he went up on the mountain and sat down there.
And great crowds came to him, bringing with them the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others, and they laid them at his feet, and he healed them,
so that the crowd marveled when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made whole, the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they glorified the God of Israel.
Then Jesus called his disciples to him and said, 'I have compassion on the crowd, because they have already remained with me three days and have nothing to eat; and I am unwilling to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way.'
καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταί· Πόθεν ἡμῖν ἐν ἐρημίᾳ ἄρτοι τοσοῦτοι ὥστε χορτάσαι ὄχλον τοσοῦτον;
And the disciples said to him, 'Where would we get enough bread in a desolate place to feed so great a crowd?'
And Jesus said to them, 'How many loaves do you have?' They said, 'Seven, and a few small fish.'
And commanding the crowd to recline on the ground,
he took the seven loaves and the fish, and having given thanks he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples to the crowds.
And they all ate and were satisfied, and they took up seven baskets full of the broken pieces that were left over.
Those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children.
And having sent away the crowds, he got into the boat and came to the region of Magadan.
