Matthew 16 — clausal layoutΚΑΤΑ ΜΑΘΘΑΙΟΝ ΙϚ′

Each line is one clause or discrete phrase of the standard critical text, colored by syntactic type; indentation marks levels of subordination. The verse numbers sit in the left gutter; the small tag on each line names the clause type and its function.

independentparticipialrelativecausecontentconditionaldashed = verbless / suspended

Flush-left = a main (independent) clause. Each dependent line begins directly beneath the word it attaches to in the line above — the anchor word is dotted-underlined, and lights up when you hover its dependent clause; each tag also names the attachment. A dashed border marks verbless, elliptical, or suspended lines. Where a long sentence's staircase runs wider than the page, the diagram scrolls sideways. (In print, or without JavaScript, lines fall back to stepped indent columns.)

Analysis. Matthew 16 is the Gospel's hinge told almost entirely in dialogue, and the layout shows a narrative spine of short purple clauses — asked, said, understood, charged, began — whose real weight hangs blue beneath the verbs of saying. The first scene turns on a demand refused: the weather-signs saying of vv. 2b–3 (a possible Western non-interpolation, absent from א B and double-bracketed in NA28, printed here as the chapter data prints it, the doubt flagged) descends through the quoted folk-forecasts — λέγετε, then the verbless εὐδία and σήμερον χειμών with their γάρ-grounds one step deeper — before the μέν/δέ verdict and the Jonah-refusal repeated from 12:39. The leaven dialogue (vv. 5–12) is a catechism: the disciples' whispered ἄρτους οὐκ ἐλάβομεν, the ὀλιγόπιστοι rebuke with its recalled numbers (five loaves, seven loaves, κόφινοι and σπυρίδες kept distinct), and the evangelist's own τότε συνῆκαν resolving the metaphor to διδαχή. At Caesarea Philippi (vv. 13–20) the two questions and Peter's confession stand as speech under their frames, and Matthew's additions to Mark hang in one blue stack under εἶπεν: the μακάριος beatitude with its ὅτι-ground on flesh-and-blood one step deeper, the Πέτρος/πέτρα wordplay (read here, with the run of the sentence, as Peter-the-confessor — the classic crux, named not dodged), the gates of Hades, and the keys with their paired ὃ-ἐάν protases leaning forward on future-perfect apodoses (ἔσται δεδεμένον, heaven's ratifying — or antecedent — decision, the periphrasis kept in the gloss). Ἀπὸ τότε ἤρξατο (v. 21) is Matthew's structural formula turning the Gospel toward Jerusalem: the fourfold infinitive chain hangs under δεῖ, Peter's ἵλεώς σοι (a verbless mercy-idiom only Matthew quotes) under his λέγων, and the counter-rebuke makes the rock a σκάνδαλον with its ὅτι-ground beneath. The discipleship coda (vv. 24–28) is conditional architecture inside one quotation: the εἴ-τις and ὃς-ἐάν protases lean forward, anchorless, one deeper than their apodoses, over the deny-take-follow imperatives and the save-lose paradox; v. 26's backward ἐάν-protases hang anchored under ὠφεληθήσεται; the γάρ-chain grounds the whole in the coming Son of Man (v. 27), and the ἀμήν-promise of v. 28 descends four levels to its ἕως-ἄν clause — transfiguration (17:1 follows 'after six days'), resurrection, or parousia, the famous crux glossed but left open.
