Matthew 17 — clausal layoutΚΑΤΑ ΜΑΘΘΑΙΟΝ ΙΖ′

Each line is one clause or discrete phrase of the standard critical text, colored by syntactic type; indentation marks levels of subordination. The verse numbers sit in the left gutter; the small tag on each line names the clause type and its function.

independentparticipialrelativepurposecausecontentconditionalphrase modifierdashed = verbless / suspended

Flush-left = a main (independent) clause. Each dependent line begins directly beneath the word it attaches to in the line above — the anchor word is dotted-underlined, and lights up when you hover its dependent clause; each tag also names the attachment. A dashed border marks verbless, elliptical, or suspended lines. Where a long sentence's staircase runs wider than the page, the diagram scrolls sideways. (In print, or without JavaScript, lines fall back to stepped indent columns.)

Analysis. Matthew 17 keeps the narrative grammar of Mark 9 but tightens it: the mainline runs flush-left in coordinate purple clauses opening with καί, δέ, and τότε, and the historic presents are flagged as they land — παραλαμβάνει and ἀναφέρει carrying the three up the mountain (v. 1), λέγει introducing both the mustard-seed answer (v. 20) and Peter's Ναί (v. 25). Against that column the chapter's hinges indent: preposed genitive absolutes and circumstantial participles lean forward, anchorless, on the verb below (ἔτι αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος cutting Peter off mid-offer, καταβαινόντων αὐτῶν, Καὶ ἐλθόντων, Συστρεφομένων, Ἐλθόντων εἰς Καφαρναούμ, the accusative ἐλθόντα of v. 25, and εἰπόντος δέ carrying Peter's whole answer inside itself), and every word of speech hangs blue (cnt) beneath its verb of saying — the Father's declaration under λέγουσα (Ps 2:7 with Isa 42:1, plus the ἀκούετε αὐτοῦ of Deut 18:15), the Elijah dialogue under its εἶπεν-frames, the father's plea under λέγων with its ὅτι-grounds stepping down to the γάρ of fire and water. Protases inside speech lean forward one step above their apodoses: εἰ θέλεις over ποιήσω (v. 4), and ἐὰν ἔχητε πίστιν ὡς κόκκον σινάπεως over ἐρεῖτε, with the command to the mountain (Μετάβα ἔνθεν ἐκεῖ) hanging one deeper as speech inside speech (v. 20). Cruxes taken or flagged: Matthew's answer to the disciples' failure is διὰ τὴν ὀλιγοπιστίαν ὑμῶν — his signature 'little faith,' where Mark 9:29 has prayer — and the traditional v. 21 ('this kind goes out only by prayer and fasting'), a harmonization to Mark, is absent from the critical text, so the chapter runs 1–20, 22–27 with the gap named in the tag; σεληνιάζεται (v. 15) is glossed literally 'moonstruck' (epilepsy attributed to the moon); and in the temple-tax scene the layout gives the argument its shape — the double question of v. 25 with its verbless alternative (ἀπὸ τῶν υἱῶν ἢ ἀπὸ τῶν ἀλλοτρίων) hanging beneath λαμβάνουσιν, Peter's answer inside the genitive absolute, the Ἄρα-γε inference, and the preposed purpose ἵνα μὴ σκανδαλίσωμεν αὐτούς leaning forward on βάλε — freedom asserted, then waived for the sake of others.
