Acts 10 — clausal layoutΠΡΑΞΕΙΣ ΑΠΟΣΤΟΛΩΝ Ι′

Each line is one clause or discrete phrase of the standard critical text, colored by syntactic type; indentation marks levels of subordination. The verse numbers sit in the left gutter; the small tag on each line names the clause type and its function.

independentparticipialrelativepurposecausecontentconditionalphrase modifierdashed = verbless / suspended

Flush-left = a main (independent) clause. Each dependent line begins directly beneath the word it attaches to in the line above — the anchor word is dotted-underlined, and lights up when you hover its dependent clause; each tag also names the attachment. A dashed border marks verbless, elliptical, or suspended lines. Where a long sentence's staircase runs wider than the page, the diagram scrolls sideways. (In print, or without JavaScript, lines fall back to stepped indent columns.)

Analysis. Acts 10 is Luke's hinge, and the layout shows a chapter built of speech: five narrative chains, each promptly opening a blue cnt ladder under a verb of saying — the angel under εἶπεν, the heavenly voice under φωνή, the Spirit under εἶπεν, Cornelius' recital under ἔφη (with the angel quoted inside it under a historic-present φησιν, speech within speech), and Peter's Caesarea kerygma, a long catena hanging under the single εἶπεν of the ἀνοίξας-τὸ-στόμα frame (vv. 34–43), so that the sermon reads as one indented column until the Spirit interrupts it mid-word at v. 44. Narrative movement rides on Luke's preposed hinges — genitive absolutes and temporal ὡς-clauses that lean forward, anchorless, on the verb below (ὁδοιπορούντων ἐκείνων, παρασκευαζόντων αὐτῶν, Ἔτι λαλοῦντος τοῦ Πέτρου) — and the layout lets the dossier-style suspensions stand: Ἀνὴρ δέ τις (vv. 1–2) waits two verses for its verb εἶδεν, and the sermon's τὸν λόγον (v. 36) hangs as a marked anacoluthon resumed by τὸ ῥῆμα of v. 37, with οὗτός ἐστιν πάντων κύριος breaking in as the parenthetical christological apex. Cruxes taken or flagged: the vision's referent — the tag at v. 15 (ἃ ὁ θεὸς ἐκαθάρισεν σὺ μὴ κοίνου) leaves foods/Gentiles open, but v. 28's μηδένα … ἄνθρωπον is laid out as Peter's own decoding; τρεῖς in v. 19 against the Western 'two'; ἀπὸ τετάρτης ἡμέρας (v. 30) read inclusively; διακρινόμενος (v. 20) glossed 'hesitate' with the 11:12 double sense noted; and προσεκύνησεν (v. 25) rendered as reverence Peter must nonetheless refuse.
