Acts 22 — clausal layoutΠΡΑΞΕΙΣ ΑΠΟΣΤΟΛΩΝ ΚΒ′

Each line is one clause or discrete phrase of the standard critical text, colored by syntactic type; indentation marks levels of subordination. The verse numbers sit in the left gutter; the small tag on each line names the clause type and its function.

independentparticipialrelativepurposecausecomparativecontentconditionaldashed = verbless / suspended

Flush-left = a main (independent) clause. Each dependent line begins directly beneath the word it attaches to in the line above — the anchor word is dotted-underlined, and lights up when you hover its dependent clause; each tag also names the attachment. A dashed border marks verbless, elliptical, or suspended lines. Where a long sentence's staircase runs wider than the page, the diagram scrolls sideways. (In print, or without JavaScript, lines fall back to stepped indent columns.)

Analysis. Acts 22 is a speech without a speech-frame: the λέγων that introduces it stands back in 21:40, so the defense (vv. 1–21) runs as one long section in which the speech's own main verbs hold the depth-0 margin — Paul as narrator of his own conversion, with Luke's one aside (v. 2, the hush at the Hebrew dialect) interrupting flush-left before the recital resumes. Against that margin the apologia's three panels indent: the credential chain of v. 3 (four participial credentials stacked under ἀνήρ — born, brought up, trained, being zealous), the Damascus road retold in the first person with its dialogue nesting as speech-within-speech (the τίς εἶ, κύριε exchange hanging blue under ἀπεκρίθην and εἶπεν), and the temple trance, where the ἐγένετο-formula takes its infinitive complements as cnt lines (γενέσθαι με ἐν ἐκστάσει, καὶ ἰδεῖν) and Paul's Stephen-confession hangs beneath ἐπίστανται. Cruxes the layout names rather than settles: v. 9's τὴν φωνὴν οὐκ ἤκουσαν against Acts 9:7 (accusative vs. genitive with ἀκούω — an undifferentiated sound versus the intelligible voice); v. 16's aorist middle imperatives βάπτισαι καὶ ἀπόλουσαι with ἐπικαλεσάμενος, the baptismal crux; v. 22's Αἶρε echoing the passion cry of Luke 23:18; and the citizenship exchange of v. 28, where the tribune's ἐκτησάμην ('I bought it') is answered by Paul's intensive perfect γεγέννημαι — born one, and standing so. The chapter closes with ἔλυσεν (v. 30) undoing the unlawful ἦν δεδεκώς of v. 29 as Paul is set before the very Sanhedrin whose letters he once carried (v. 5).
