John 8 — clausal layoutΚΑΤΑ ΙΩΑΝΝΗΝ Η′

Each line is one clause or discrete phrase of the standard critical text, colored by syntactic type; indentation marks levels of subordination. The verse numbers sit in the left gutter; the small tag on each line names the clause type and its function.

independentparticipialrelativepurposecausecomparativecontentconditionalphrase modifierdashed = verbless / suspended

Flush-left = a main (independent) clause. Each dependent line begins directly beneath the word it attaches to in the line above — the anchor word is dotted-underlined, and lights up when you hover its dependent clause; each tag also names the attachment. A dashed border marks verbless, elliptical, or suspended lines. Where a long sentence's staircase runs wider than the page, the diagram scrolls sideways. (In print, or without JavaScript, lines fall back to stepped indent columns.)

Analysis. John 8 falls into two unequal parts, and the layout shows both. Verses 1–11 are the pericope adulterae, printed inside the double brackets of NA28 and copied here verbatim, brackets and all: the passage is absent from P66, P75, Sinaiticus, and Vaticanus, floats in the tradition (after 7:52 in D and the Western witnesses, after Luke 21:38 or John 21:25 elsewhere), and is laid out as what it is on the page — a short narrative of flush-left purple aorists and historic presents, the accusers' test hanging blue under λέγουσιν, the ἀναμάρτητος word under εἶπεν, and the close a pair of one-line speeches (Οὐδείς, κύριε — Οὐδὲ ἐγώ σε κατακρίνω). From v. 12 the Johannine chapter proper runs as one long controversy: each of Jesus' replies is a cnt catena hanging at constant depth under its speech-frame, and the page's rhythm is the seam-line of interjections — the Pharisees at v. 13, the Judeans at vv. 19, 22, 25, 33, 39, 41, 48, 52, 57 — each a shallow frame breaking into the column before the next catena resumes. The chapter's spine is given its own lines and tagged: the three absolute ἐγώ εἰμι sayings (vv. 24, 28, 58), read with Exod 3:14 and Deutero-Isaiah's ἐγώ εἰμι (Isa 43:10 LXX), with v. 58's πρὶν Ἀβραὰμ γενέσθαι ἐγὼ εἰμί — aorist coming-to-be against unpredicated present — as the divine claim the stones of v. 59 answer. Other cruxes taken openly: Τὴν ἀρχὴν ὅ τι καὶ λαλῶ ὑμῖν (v. 25) is read as elliptical 'what I have been telling you from the beginning' (against 'why do I speak to you at all?'); ποιεῖτε in v. 39 is read as imperative where many witnesses smooth to ἐποιεῖτε; in v. 44 ἐκ τοῦ πατρὸς τοῦ διαβόλου is construed 'from your father, the devil' and ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ as 'the father of the lie'; the ἵνα of v. 56 is the object of Abraham's exultation, not purpose; and v. 57's ἑώρακας is printed against the P75 ℵ* reading 'has Abraham seen you?'.
