Now after these things the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him into every town and place where he himself was about to come.
And he was saying to them: 'The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few; therefore beg the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest.'
Go; behold, I send you out as lambs in the midst of wolves.
Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and greet no one along the road.
And into whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace to this house.'
And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him; but if not, it will return to you.
And stay in that same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the worker is worthy of his wage. Do not move from house to house.
And into whatever town you enter and they receive you, eat what is set before you,
and heal the sick in it, and say to them, 'The kingdom of God has drawn near to you.'
But into whatever town you enter and they do not receive you, going out into its streets say,
'Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off against you; nevertheless know this: the kingdom of God has drawn near.'
I tell you that it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.
Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.
Nevertheless it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you.
And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will be brought down to Hades.
The one who hears you hears me, and the one who rejects you rejects me; and the one who rejects me rejects the one who sent me.
And the seventy-two returned with joy, saying, 'Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.'
And he said to them, 'I was watching Satan fall like lightning from heaven.'
Behold, I have given you the authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will ever harm you.
Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names have been written in heaven.
In that very hour he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, 'I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your good pleasure before you.'
All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal him.
And turning to the disciples privately he said, 'Blessed are the eyes that see what you see!'
For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see and did not see it, and to hear what you hear and did not hear it.
Καὶ ἰδοὺ νομικός τις ἀνέστη ἐκπειράζων αὐτὸν λέγων· Διδάσκαλε, τί ποιήσας ζωὴν αἰώνιον κληρονομήσω;
And behold, a certain lawyer stood up to test him, saying, 'Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?'
ὁ δὲ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτόν· Ἐν τῷ νόμῳ τί γέγραπται; πῶς ἀναγινώσκεις;
And he said to him, 'What is written in the Law? How do you read it?'
And he answered, 'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.'
And he said to him, 'You have answered rightly; do this and you will live.'
ὁ δὲ θέλων δικαιῶσαι ἑαυτὸν εἶπεν πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν· Καὶ τίς ἐστίν μου πλησίον;
But he, wishing to justify himself, said to Jesus, 'And who is my neighbor?'
Jesus took up the question and said: 'A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell among robbers, who both stripped him and laid blows on him, then went off, leaving him half-dead.
Now by coincidence a certain priest was going down that road, and seeing him he passed by on the opposite side;
and likewise a Levite also, coming to the place and seeing him, passed by on the opposite side.
But a certain Samaritan, as he traveled, came upon him, and seeing him he was moved with compassion,
and he went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and setting him on his own animal he brought him to an inn and cared for him.
And on the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper and said, 'Care for him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I return.'
τίς τούτων τῶν τριῶν πλησίον δοκεῖ σοι γεγονέναι τοῦ ἐμπεσόντος εἰς τοὺς λῃστάς;
'Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?'
And he said, 'The one who showed mercy to him.' And Jesus said to him, 'Go, and you do likewise.'
Now as they traveled, he entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed him.
And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his word.
But Martha was distracted with much serving; and coming up she said, 'Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her, then, to help me.'
But the Lord answered her, 'Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things,
but one thing is necessary; for Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken from her.'
