The Gospel according to Luke, Chapter 13ΚΑΤΑ ΛΟΥΚΑΝ ΙΓ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

And he said to them, "Go and tell that fox, 'Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and on the third day I finish my course.'

Defiant replyκαίJesus brands Herod 'that fox' and asserts that a divine timetable, not a tetrarch's threat, governs his course; τελειοῦμαι hints at his consummation.

Nevertheless I must go on my way today and tomorrow and the day following, for it cannot be that a prophet should perish away from Jerusalem.

Necessity of the journeyasyndetonThe divine δεῖ governs his itinerary; the bitter irony — a prophet's death belongs to Jerusalem — pivots into the lament.

Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you! How often I wanted to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!

Lament (apostrophe)asyndetonA double-vocative lament: the city's history of killing prophets meets Christ's frustrated maternal longing — 'I wanted… you were not willing.'

Behold, your house is left to you. And I tell you, you will not see me until the time comes when you say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.'
