Luke 19 — clausal layoutΚΑΤΑ ΛΟΥΚΑΝ ΙΘ′

Each line is one clause or discrete phrase of the standard critical text, colored by syntactic type; indentation marks levels of subordination. The verse numbers sit in the left gutter; the small tag on each line names the clause type and its function.

independentparticipialrelativepurposecausecomparativecontentconditionalphrase modifierdashed = verbless / suspended

Flush-left = a main (independent) clause. Each dependent line begins directly beneath the word it attaches to in the line above — the anchor word is dotted-underlined, and lights up when you hover its dependent clause; each tag also names the attachment. A dashed border marks verbless, elliptical, or suspended lines. Where a long sentence's staircase runs wider than the page, the diagram scrolls sideways. (In print, or without JavaScript, lines fall back to stepped indent columns.)

Analysis. Luke 19 closes the travel narrative at the gates of Jerusalem, and the layout shows its three registers. The Zacchaeus episode (vv. 1–10) runs as flat Lukan narrative — coordinate purple mainline clauses, the dialogue hanging blue beneath its verbs of saying — until the climactic γάρ-chain: Jesus' verdict (σωτηρία … ἐγένετο) carries the καθότι-ground ('he too is a son of Abraham') and then the Son-of-Man mission-statement of v. 10, laid as a second ground under ἐγένετο with its purpose pair (ζητῆσαι καὶ σῶσαι) one step deeper — the chapter's thesis at its deepest indent. In the minas parable (vv. 11–27, kept one section) the narration inside Jesus' quotation runs flush at the margin, as in the talents layout of Matthew 25 — the story is its own mainline — with the three reckoning dialogues hanging under their speech-frames; the third servant's excuse chains five deep (μνᾶ → εἶχον → ἐφοβούμην → αὐστηρός → the grasping proverb), the master's ᾔδεις-retort echoes it clause for clause, and v. 27's fronted τοὺς ἐχθρούς μου τούτους leans, dashed, on the ἀγάγετε it awaits — the citizen-thread of v. 14 closed in blood. The entry (vv. 28–40) alternates forward-leaning genitive absolutes with mainline aorists; the password Ὁ κύριος αὐτοῦ χρείαν ἔχει stands twice at matching depth (vv. 31, 34), commission and fulfillment; the acclamation lines are verbless (Ps 118:26 with ὁ βασιλεύς inserted — the editions divide over the form, and the tag flags it). The lament (vv. 41–44) turns on two cruxes the layout takes sides on: the Εἰ ἔγνως protasis is aposiopetic — no apodosis exists, so it hangs anchored under λέγων as quoted content, dashed — and the whole siege-oracle (five coordinate futures) is strung at one depth under ἐκρύβη as the ὅτι-ground of the hiding, with ἀνθ’ ὧν one step deeper as the ground of the grounds. The cleansing (vv. 45–48) sets Isa 56:7 under γέγραπται with Jer 7:11 as Jesus' own contrast-clause, and ends level: teaching, plotting, and the people hanging (ἐξεκρέματο) on his words. Interpretive choices flagged in tags: ἡλικίᾳ as 'stature' not 'age' (v. 3); the performative presents δίδωμι/ἀποδίδωμι as vow, not habit (v. 8); ὁ κύριος of the colt read messianically (v. 31); ἐὰν + future indicative (v. 40).
