And immediately, early in the morning, the chief priests, having held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council, bound Jesus, led him away, and delivered him to Pilate.
And Pilate questioned him, 'Are you the king of the Jews?' And he answered him, 'You say so.'
And the chief priests accused him of many things.
And Pilate again questioned him, saying, 'Do you answer nothing? See how many charges they bring against you.'
But Jesus still answered nothing, so that Pilate was amazed.
Now at the feast he used to release to them one prisoner whom they requested.
And there was one called Barabbas, bound with the rebels who had committed murder in the insurrection.
And the crowd came up and began to ask him to do as he was accustomed to do for them.
ὁ δὲ Πιλᾶτος ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς λέγων· Θέλετε ἀπολύσω ὑμῖν τὸν βασιλέα τῶν Ἰουδαίων;
And Pilate answered them, saying, 'Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?'
For he knew that the chief priests had handed him over out of envy.
But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas to them instead.
ὁ δὲ Πιλᾶτος πάλιν ἀποκριθεὶς ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς· Τί οὖν θέλετε ποιήσω ὃν λέγετε τὸν βασιλέα τῶν Ἰουδαίων;
And Pilate again answered them, 'Then what shall I do with the one you call the king of the Jews?'
And they cried out again, 'Crucify him!'
And Pilate said to them, 'Why, what evil has he done?' But they cried out all the more, 'Crucify him!'
So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas to them, and having scourged Jesus, delivered him to be crucified.
And the soldiers led him away into the courtyard, that is, the praetorium, and they called together the whole cohort.
And they clothed him in purple, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him;
And they began to salute him, 'Hail, king of the Jews!'
And they kept striking his head with a reed, and spitting on him, and bending their knees they did homage to him.
And when they had mocked him, they stripped the purple off him and put his own clothes on him. And they led him out to crucify him.
And they compelled a passer-by, Simon of Cyrene, coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross.
And they brought him to the place Golgotha, which means, being translated, 'Place of a Skull.'
And they offered him wine mingled with myrrh, but he did not take it.
And they crucified him, and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take.
And it was the third hour when they crucified him.
And the inscription of the charge against him was written above: 'The King of the Jews.'
And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left.
And those who passed by reviled him, wagging their heads and saying, 'Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,
save yourself, and come down from the cross!'
Likewise also the chief priests, mocking him among themselves with the scribes, said, 'He saved others; he cannot save himself.
Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.' And those crucified with him reviled him.
And when the sixth hour had come, darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour.
καὶ τῇ ἐνάτῃ ὥρᾳ ἐβόησεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς φωνῇ μεγάλῃ· Ἐλωῒ ἐλωῒ λεμὰ σαβαχθάνι; ὅ ἐστιν μεθερμηνευόμενον· Ὁ θεός μου ὁ θεός μου, εἰς τί ἐγκατέλιπές με;
And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, 'Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?' which means, translated, 'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?'
And some of the bystanders, hearing it, said, 'Look, he is calling Elijah.'
And one ran, and filling a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed and gave him to drink, saying, 'Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.'
And Jesus, uttering a loud cry, breathed his last.
And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.
And when the centurion who stood facing him saw that he thus breathed his last, he said, 'Truly this man was the Son of God.'
There were also women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome,
who, when he was in Galilee, followed him and ministered to him, and many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem.
And when evening had already come, since it was the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath,
Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was himself also waiting for the kingdom of God, came and boldly went in to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
And Pilate was surprised that he was already dead, and summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he had been dead for some time.
And when he learned it from the centurion, he granted the corpse to Joseph.
And he bought a linen cloth, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a tomb that had been hewn out of rock, and rolled a stone against the door of the tomb.
And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.
