Matthew 13 — clausal layoutΚΑΤΑ ΜΑΘΘΑΙΟΝ ΙΓ′

Each line is one clause or discrete phrase of the standard critical text, colored by syntactic type; indentation marks levels of subordination. The verse numbers sit in the left gutter; the small tag on each line names the clause type and its function.

independentparticipialrelativepurposecausecomparativecontentconditionalphrase modifierdashed = verbless / suspended

Flush-left = a main (independent) clause. Each dependent line begins directly beneath the word it attaches to in the line above — the anchor word is dotted-underlined, and lights up when you hover its dependent clause; each tag also names the attachment. A dashed border marks verbless, elliptical, or suspended lines. Where a long sentence's staircase runs wider than the page, the diagram scrolls sideways. (In print, or without JavaScript, lines fall back to stepped indent columns.)

ἐδίδασκεν αὐτοὺς ἐν τῇ συναγωγῇ αὐτῶν,independent — durative imperfect — and the distancing αὐτῶν: THEIR synagogue (cf. 4:23)
ὥστε ἐκπλήσσεσθαι αὐτοὺς καὶ λέγειν·purpose — ὥστε + infinitive — actual result (typed pur; no result key): astonishment that curdles into offense
Πόθεν τούτῳ ἡ σοφία αὕτη καὶ αἱ δυνάμεις;content — verbless πόθεν-question — the same πόθεν as the servants' (v. 27); τούτῳ, the dismissive dative: 'this fellow'

vv. 55–57a — the questions of familiarity, and the stumbling

55
οὐχ οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ τοῦ τέκτονος υἱός;content — οὐχ expects 'yes' — Matthew softens Mark's 'the carpenter' to 'the carpenter's son'; the reader knows a deeper paternity (1:16)
οὐχ ἡ μήτηρ αὐτοῦ λέγεται Μαριὰμ καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ Ἰάκωβος καὶ Ἰωσὴφ καὶ Σίμων καὶ Ἰούδας;content — the family census — four brothers named (Ἰωσήφ printed; witnesses vary Ἰωσῆς/Ἰωάννης); James, later head of the Jerusalem church
56
καὶ αἱ ἀδελφαὶ αὐτοῦ οὐχὶ πᾶσαι πρὸς ἡμᾶς εἰσιν;content — the unnamed sisters — πρὸς ἡμᾶς: settled neighbors still; the whole family accounted ordinary
πόθεν οὖν τούτῳ ταῦτα πάντα;content — the verbless πόθεν returns — the right question, about to be answered wrongly
57
καὶ ἐσκανδαλίζοντο ἐν αὐτῷ.independent — imperfect ἐσκανδαλίζοντο — the rocky ground's verb (v. 21) enacted by his own town: stumbling over the familiar

vv. 57b–58 — the proverb, and the works withheld

ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς·independent — the answer-frame
Οὐκ ἔστιν προφήτης ἄτιμοςcontent — the proverb — ἄτιμος: Jesus takes the prophets' lot as his own (cf. 23:37)
εἰ μὴ ἐν τῇ πατρίδι καὶ ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ αὐτοῦ.conditional — exceptive εἰ μή — backward on ἄτιμος; Matthew drops Mark's 'among his kin,' leaving πατρίς and οἰκία the two circles of dishonor
58
καὶ οὐκ ἐποίησεν ἐκεῖ δυνάμεις πολλὰς διὰ τὴν ἀπιστίαν αὐτῶν.independent — διά + accusative grounds kept in-clause — Matthew's 'did not' for Mark's 'could not' (Mk 6:5), guarding the power while indicting the ἀπιστία; the chapter of hearing ends on the town that would not
Analysis. Matthew 13 sets seven parables and their machinery of concealment on one page, and the layout keeps the convention settled at Mark 4: every discourse frame stands flush left at 0 — the boat-pulpit of vv. 1–3, the four fresh frames Ἄλλην παραβολὴν παρέθηκεν / ἐλάλησεν (vv. 24, 31, 33), the house of v. 36, the closing εἶπεν of vv. 52 and 57 — and everything spoken hangs blue (cnt) beneath its verb of saying, so that a whole parable reads as a column-within-a-column: narrative inside speech keeps its parataxis, each δέ- or καί-event a coordinate cnt line at the speech's own depth, with dependents indenting from there (the ὅπου and διά-τό-infinitives of v. 5, the folded dialogue of the weeds, where the householder's ἐρῶ τοῖς θερισταῖς carries a command catena two steps down and the πρὸς τό-infinitive of burning hangs a fourth deep). Genitive absolutes and preposed participles lean forward anchor-less on their verbs (ἡλίου ἀνατείλαντος, παντὸς ἀκούοντος, γενομένης θλίψεως, Τότε ἀφείς, καὶ ἐλθών), as do the temporal ὅτε/ὅταν clauses and the conditional relatives ὅστις ἔχει / ὅστις οὐκ ἔχει of v. 12 (all typed cnd). The chapter's twin Scripture-fulfilments shape its two centers: at vv. 14–15 Isaiah 6:9–10 LXX hangs as a quotation catena under ἡ λέγουσα inside Jesus' own answer — Matthew's only ἀναπληροῦται — with the μήποτε clause a step deeper under ἐκάμμυσαν; and the crux is taken openly: Matthew's ὅτι at v. 13 ('because seeing they do not see') recasts Mark's telic ἵνα as description of a hardness already there, the people's own ἐκάμμυσαν doing what Mark's divine purpose did. At vv. 34–35 the narrator's ὅπως πληρωθῇ formula (the shape of 1:22) carries Ps 78:2 under λέγοντος — the psalmist of Asaph counted a prophet. The interpretations mirror their parables: the four soils return as four hearings (vv. 18–23), each a pendent nominative resumed by οὗτός ἐστιν, kept whole and tagged rather than split; the weeds return as a verbless equation-table (vv. 37–39), seven cnt lines of allegorical identifications, before the ὥσπερ of v. 40 leans forward onto the eschatological οὕτως ἔσται and the furnace-refrain ἐκεῖ ἔσται ὁ κλαυθμός sounds twice verbatim (vv. 42, 50). The kingdom-formula Ὁμοία ἐστίν introduces mustard seed, leaven, treasure, pearl, and net, each simile a dative with its story folded into relative clauses hanging on the compared thing itself (κόκκῳ, ζύμῃ, θησαυρῷ, σαγήνῃ); v. 51's Συνήκατε — the chapter's thread-verb συνίημι — still hangs on the εἶπεν of v. 37, since the critical text supplies no new frame, and the scribe discipled to the kingdom closes the discourse with things new and old. The Nazareth coda (vv. 53–58) reverts to narrative grammar: the Καὶ ἐγένετο ὅτε ἐτέλεσεν formula that closes each of Matthew's five discourses, the hometown questions hanging under λέγειν, the proverb of the dishonored prophet with its exceptive εἰ μή, and the chapter's last word the flat διὰ τὴν ἀπιστίαν αὐτῶν — unbelief restraining the δυνάμεις the crowd itself had named.
