And to the angel of the church in Sardis write: These things says the one who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars: I know your works — that you have a name that you are alive, and you are dead.

Fifth letter opened: SardisκαίThe fifth proclamation opens in the fixed pattern. The self-description draws on 1:4, 16, 20 (the seven Spirits, the seven stars); the diagnosis is the sharpest reversal yet — a reputation for life masking death.

Become watchful, and strengthen the things that remain, which were about to die, for I have not found your works complete before my God.

Remember, then, how you received and heard; and keep it, and repent. If, then, you will not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will surely not know at what hour I will come upon you.

Remember, keep, repent — or judgmentοὖνThree imperatives, then a warning. The thief imagery (cf. Mt 24:43; 1 Thess 5:2) presses the failure of vigilance; the emphatic οὐ μή denies any forewarning.

But you have a few names in Sardis who have not soiled their garments, and they will walk with me in white, because they are worthy.

The one who conquers will thus be clothed in white garments, and I will surely not erase his name from the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels.

I know your works — behold, I have set before you an opened door, which no one can shut — that you have little power, and yet you kept my word and did not deny my name.

The open door for the faithful weakasyndetonNo rebuke for Philadelphia. The 'opened door' (perfect ptc. — standing open) is set before a church of small power that has nonetheless been faithful in word and confession.
