And it came about afterward that he himself was traveling through, city by city and village by village, preaching and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God, and the Twelve were with him,
and some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities — Mary called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out,
and Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others, who were supporting them out of their own means.
And when a great crowd was gathering and people were coming to him from town after town, he spoke by a parable:
The sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell along the path and was trampled, and the birds of the sky devoured it.
And other seed fell on the rock, and when it grew up it withered, because it had no moisture.
And other seed fell amid the thorns, and the thorns grew up with it and choked it.
And other seed fell into the good soil, and when it grew it produced fruit a hundredfold. Saying these things, he called out: 'The one who has ears to hear, let him hear.'
And his disciples were asking him what this parable might be.
And he said: 'To you it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest in parables, so that seeing they may not see and hearing they may not understand.'
Now this is the parable: The seed is the word of God.
Those along the path are the ones who hear; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their heart, so that they may not believe and be saved.
Those on the rock are the ones who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a while and in a time of testing fall away.
And what fell among the thorns — these are the ones who hear, but as they go along they are choked by cares and riches and pleasures of life and bring no fruit to maturity.
But what is in the good soil — these are the ones who, having heard the word with a noble and good heart, hold it fast and bear fruit with endurance.
No one, having lit a lamp, covers it with a vessel or puts it under a bed, but sets it on a lampstand, so that those who come in may see the light.
For nothing is hidden that will not become manifest, nor secret that will not be known and come to light.
Take heed, therefore, how you hear; for whoever has, to him more will be given, and whoever has not, even what he seems to have will be taken from him.
And his mother and brothers came to him, but they could not reach him because of the crowd.
And it was reported to him: 'Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wishing to see you.'
But he answered and said to them: 'My mother and my brothers are these — the ones who hear the word of God and do it.'
Now it came about on one of those days that he got into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, 'Let us cross over to the other side of the lake.' And they set out.
And as they sailed he fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were being swamped and were in danger.
And they came and woke him, saying, 'Master, Master, we are perishing!' And he, having awakened, rebuked the wind and the raging water; and they ceased, and there was a calm.
εἶπεν δὲ αὐτοῖς· Ποῦ ἡ πίστις ὑμῶν; φοβηθέντες δὲ ἐθαύμασαν, λέγοντες πρὸς ἀλλήλους· Τίς ἄρα οὗτός ἐστιν ὅτι καὶ τοῖς ἀνέμοις ἐπιτάσσει καὶ τῷ ὕδατι, καὶ ὑπακούουσιν αὐτῷ;
And he said to them, 'Where is your faith?' And being afraid, they marveled, saying to one another, 'Who then is this, that he commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him?'
And they sailed down to the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee.
And as he stepped out onto the land, a man from the city who had demons met him; and for a long time he had worn no clothing and would not stay in a house but among the tombs.
And seeing Jesus, he cried out and fell before him and said with a loud voice, 'What have I to do with you, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me.'
For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For many times it had seized him, and he was kept bound with chains and shackles, yet breaking the bonds he was driven by the demon into the wilderness.
And Jesus asked him, 'What is your name?' And he said, 'Legion,' because many demons had entered into him.
And they were begging him not to command them to depart into the abyss.
Now a sizable herd of swine was feeding there on the hillside; and they begged him to permit them to enter those, and he permitted them.
And the demons, coming out of the man, entered into the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.
And when those tending them saw what had happened, they fled and reported it in the city and in the countryside.
And they went out to see what had happened, and came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone out sitting, clothed and in his right mind, at the feet of Jesus; and they were afraid.
And those who had seen it reported to them how the demon-possessed man had been delivered.
And the whole multitude of the surrounding region of the Gerasenes asked him to depart from them, for they were gripped with great fear; and he got into a boat and returned.
And the man from whom the demons had gone out was begging to be with him; but he sent him away, saying:
'Return to your house and tell all that God has done for you.' And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city all that Jesus had done for him.
Now when Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed him, for they were all waiting for him.
And behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue; and falling at the feet of Jesus, he was begging him to come into his house,
because he had an only daughter, about twelve years old, and she was dying. And as he went, the crowds were pressing in on him.
And a woman who had been in a flow of blood for twelve years, who, having spent her whole living on physicians, could not be healed by anyone,
came up behind and touched the fringe of his garment, and immediately her flow of blood stopped.
And Jesus said, 'Who is the one who touched me?' When all denied it, Peter and those with him said, 'Master, the crowds surround you and press upon you.'
But Jesus said, 'Someone touched me, for I perceived that power had gone out from me.'
And the woman, seeing that she had not escaped notice, came trembling and fell down before him and declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him and how she had been healed immediately.
And he said to her, 'Daughter, your faith has saved you; go in peace.'
While he was still speaking, someone came from the synagogue ruler's house, saying, 'Your daughter has died; trouble the Teacher no longer.'
But Jesus, having heard, answered him, 'Do not fear; only believe, and she will be saved.'
And coming to the house, he allowed no one to enter with him except Peter and John and James and the child's father and mother.
And they were all weeping and mourning for her. But he said, 'Do not weep; she has not died but is sleeping.'
And they laughed at him, knowing that she had died.
But he, taking hold of her hand, called out, saying, 'Child, arise.'
And her spirit returned, and she rose up immediately, and he directed that something be given her to eat.
And her parents were astonished; but he charged them to tell no one what had happened.
